This e-mail below was posted on the main DegreeWorks listserv in
response to a question about database size requirements. Even though
we're not a 30,000 student campus, I thought you all might want to know
Derrek's take on the issue. He's the guy who runs the DW blog out of
UC-Irvine.

Thanks, Jane

Hi All,

In my opinion, there is one rule of thumb for database sizing when it
comes to degreeworks: the maximum amount.

The Factors (UCI's profile):

-Student population (30,000)
-How deep in historical audits. (1 only. not enough space for more)
-How large the required blocks are such as GE (long)
-The retention of audits. (7 years)
-Test or Production. (test: 15GB. prod: 25GB.)
-The use of the Curriculum Planning Assistant. (No room because it
nearly
takes up twice as much space as the audit data. We estimated that we
needed 40GB. We do run small custom reports that only use about 1-2GB)

Also leave a little room for temporary database space and
indexing.(somewhere between 3-7GB)

Thankfully, We have a new server and I'm going all out. The new test
account is going to be about 20 GB and the production account is going
to
a monster at 80 GB to allow for the use of CPA.

I could go into more detail but I'll save it for a degreework blog
entry.

Thanks,
Derrek
