The H4 is a bit complicated, but otherwise a nice machine.  You can  
get the H2 for $165 street price.  I paid $199 for mine, which was  
about 3 years ago.

If multi-track might be important to you, the Zoom R16 is a wonderful  
buy at $375 street price.  That is, in fact, what I paid for mine on  
eBay through a New York retailer.  The R16 gives you the ability to  
use 8 channels at once, mix up to 16 tracks, can function as a  
controller, also functions as a card reader (records to flash card  
media), and a lot more.  Read about it here:

Memory locations, auto-locator, 8-channel digital recorder -- all for  
under $500.  My goodness.  I spend well over $10,000 in the mid-80's  
for one-inch Tascam semi-pro equipment that required dbx noise  
reduction.  It is simply amazing how the technology has brought  
professional recording to the masses.
