[Trombone-l] billy mays sorta dixie

Billy May was 22 years old when he joined the Charlie Barnet band around
July 1939. One night when the band was en route to a dance date in New
Jersey, Barnet mentioned to May that he was thinking about having an
arrangement made of the Ray Noble tune "Cherokee". By the time the bus
arrived, Billy had handed out the parts to members of the band. Barnet
recorded it on July 17, 1939.

Various people who knew Billy May have told me that he had a wonderful sense
of humor which can be heard in his music (he backed Stan Freberg on many
occasions). The Sorta-Dixie and the Sorta-May albums were whimsical joys.
And he wasn't a bad trumpet player either.
