[Trombone-l] Arban's and other thick books

Just wanted to share a tip that's turned out to be very handy. Over the
years, I've had several Arban's fall apart after the spine of the book
breaks. I recently picked up a decent used copy and took it to one of my
local printers and had them spiral-bind it. It cost $5 for the service, but
now I have a copy that lays flat when I open it.
With smaller books, especially ones that are stapled, I had resorted to
cutting them down the middle and three-hole punching them so they'd work in
a standard notebook. Not the ideal solution, since most music books are
larger than 8.5" x 11", but it worked ok. Since most places charge based on
the size of the book for spiral binding, I plan to do this for several more
books in the near future.
And, for the geekier of us, the spiral-bound volumes are easier to scan if
you need to put a small excerpt of an exercise into a document, instead of
having to reset the excerpt in your music software of choice.
