The Mahillon factory was quite innovative. I'm playing Salome right now,
written in 1905. At the time Richard Strauss was revising Berlioz'
orchestration treatise and in it advocated metal Eb clarinets for
baroque trumpet parts. According to this article:

Victor-Charles Mahillon (the son of the founder of the firm and a
seminal scholar in instruments) developed the piccolo trumpet we
commonly use today.
The firm also developed the new instruments required for Wagner:

as well as six-valved instruments improve the intonation difficulties of
valve combinations.
Others on the list will know much more about Mahillon's influence in the
development of our instruments. My knowledge of the firm comes from the
late Joe deBruycker, a Belgian repairman who apprenticed at Mahillon and
later came to Canada. He made several hundred tenor trombone bells
adapted from the Williams flare and a very few bass trombone bells.
Those of us who have these instruments aren't parting with them.
