I'm going to have to agree with John, here.

I've reamed out dozens of mouthpieces. I think that I do it in a very scientific way, being a full-fledged nerd. And I specifically ream out mouthpieces, so that they don't go into a blaring sound quite so easily.

But I want to make a distinction between reaming and drilling out a mouthpiece. When you drill out a mouthpiece, you create a cylindrical aperture, which tends to add a whispery tone to your sound. If you use a tapered form-tool (like a ground down cutting edge from a broken scissors), you can enlarge the aperture, while creating a new back-bore for the mouthpiece. Then you'll get a mouthpiece that goes into blare-mode, in a more controllable way, lets you put more air into the trombone and doesn't add that whispery tone.

On the other hand, if you are specifically out for a blaring tone, go for a mouthpiece that has a small aperture. They're way easier to over-blow.
