[Trombone-l] how do I get that blaring edgy sound?

Bill and List.

This is sort of my "thing" so I guess I'd better weigh in. I know there's a number of folks on the list who have heard me play who are just waiting to hear what I have to say on this one.

Because of my experience with Latin styles both on Trumpet and Trombone, I regard this type of sound as my primary style. The folks who tell you that this should be but one tool in your tool box are partially correct. Only problem with a sound this strong and unusual is that if you but once trot it out at the "wrong time", the person who decided that time was "wrong" will forever tag you as "harsh" or "strident" - or words to that effect. If you like this sound, use it sparingly or be prepared to limit your playing to venues where it is sought after. It is not widely appreciated.

That being said, the way to get this sound is entirely attitude. That's what this sound is - so that's what you need to put into it. Anything else is details - express an attitude and you will find that sound. What people love about this sound is the attitude. They describe it as "sizzle." Make 'em feel like a steak on a grill and you've got it. Don't overthink it - just do it.

My two cents anyway
