[Trombone-l] how do I get that blaring edgy sound?

Peter,
Many salsa players do it on big horns. The trick is to stuff a lotta  
lip into the mouthpiece, keep the tongue nice and high/forward and  
ENERGIZE that airstream!

Fat lips, fast air.
Experimentation will get you there, but thinkly slightly "upstream"  
might help, too.
