Here are more details about Kerry Turner's Bass Trombone Concerto:
Concerto for bass trombone (or tuba) and orchestra
Brass | Trombone | Tuba | Woodwind | Strings
Details:
Concerto for Bass Trombone and Orchestra was commissioned in 1999 by Mr. Phillip Brink, who at the time was bass trombonist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic. This work marks a change in the harmonic style of the composer’s music. This piece is quite Gothic in character. The three movements are: 1. Andante misterioso-Allegro, the principal theme of which is foreboding and fatalistic; 2. Andante, which is an eccentric cortège of sorts and is very colorful; and 3. March, the melody of which is is sweeping and powerful. It begins, however, in a misterioso fashion with the basses. By the end of the movement, the entire orchestra is involved in this “Gothic March”, while the bass trombone solo counterpoints it with a thematic bass line. There are very few concertos written for the bass trombone. This will without doubt be a most welcome addition to the repertoire. This concerto can also be played by the bass tuba.
