[Trombone-l] New place, old desires

I was in Navy boot camp in San Diego, in 1964, was fortunate enough to get into the Drum and Bugle corps. That got me out of a week of working in the mess hall, doing all that lovely KP stuff, and the rest of the 'wonderful' experience.

We spent our days practicing, marching, and playing shuffleboard on the concrete wash tables behind the barracks.

Also got out on a few extra trips to participate in parades.

I was sooooo happy to get away from all those push ups etc....

Speaking from my own experience, we didn't have those types of
opportunities in Navy boot camp in Orlando. The guys who went through
the Great Lakes had the option of playing in a recruit band. Not at
Orlando in the early 70s.

And our time was such that we couldn't do anything outside of our
daily routine. I remember getting very little sleep during most of
those 8 weeks.

I'm with you Adrian. Dying seemed to be a viable option at the time.
But I wouldn't take for the experience after the fact.
