Speaking from my own experience, we didn't have those types of
opportunities in Navy boot camp in Orlando. The guys who went through
the Great Lakes had the option of playing in a recruit band. Not at
Orlando in the early 70s.
And our time was such that we couldn't do anything outside of our
daily routine. I remember getting very little sleep during most of
those 8 weeks.
I'm with you Adrian. Dying seemed to be a viable option at the time.
But I wouldn't take for the experience after the fact.
