Yamaha makes a brilliant instrument in Bb with an ascending valve to C. Sure, low E is gone, and perhaps F is unreachable, but C and B _are_ and that's what it's built to do. Seams like a great (if expensive) idea.
Some have advocated Alto... I've heard worse ideas...
