I should have amended my earlier post.

I don't believe any beginner should start out on an F attachment  
anything.

I'd still opt for a beginner type instrument, even if purchased used  
on eBay.  Then, make the step-up when they are a little older and  
ready for the added weight.

Besides, who wants to "kill" a great trombone?  A kid that young, even  
if well instructed, is going to have a few accidents as a beginner.
