[Trombone-l] Alessi Seminar...

I haven't been to the Alessi Seminar, but I did attend his master
class at Tennessee Tech during Trombone Day (weekend, really) in
November 2007, organized by Joshua Hauser.
You all know Alessi is a good player. One thing I learned that
weekend is that he's a really good teacher, too. He showed a knack for
zeroing in on some aspect of a student's playing and working on that
in an encouraging manner. Joe Alessi took a number of college and high
school students, put them more or less at ease (considering they were
on stage in front of a bunch of players and standing next to a
trombone superstar), and actually got some work done on their playing.
One of the TTU guys said it was great having Alessi sitting in the
section with the concert band, too.
So don't think of Joe Alessi as a virtuoso who happens to teach on
the side. From what I saw, he's a masterful teacher.
