[Trombone-l] High and Low notes...

I'll echo this, though I've called un-triggered notes below E "False Tones" or "Sub Pedals" (which I know is incorrect, but I slip). They make about as much acoustic sense as a stopped horn. And different instruments support them differently. But they are not in the overtone series of the sounding length of the instrument, so they are being created by the player and - I believe - a higher harmonic of the actual sounding length reinforces the the tone at the octave and above, giving the notes some resonance and a touch of "focus". For instance low "B" above pedal Bb, played in 7th position, resonates 7th position B above.

My $.02

As far as above? There is NO top end of the harmonic series for any brass instrument! The "highest" note is the limitation of the player only. The instrument has no limitation!!! That's like my students who say their trombones are bass clef only. NAWW No instrument is regulated to only one clef, it's the player who may limit himself or herself, not the instrument.
