Galen,

Trombones have had leadpipes for many, many years but they weren't  
removable until fairly recently.  Manufacturers soldered in the  
leadpipe at the factory and you lived with whatever they decided to  
put in, and you liked it.  Most people probably didn't even know  
there was a leadpipe in there, but there was.
