It was Warren Barker.

I know from an exchange about twenty years ago. We had a trombone
quartet which did tons of school shows, and to promote ourselves we
played for a social hour at a British Columbia Music Educators social hour.

The educators had had a hard day and were relieving the tension with
various coloured liquids while we played on a little stage in a
cafeteria. After we played our four trombone rip of the arrangement an
older gentleman made his way across the floor.

"Oh,oh," I thought. "Do we know Melancholy Baby?"

Instead, the older gentleman said, "Thank you for playing my arrangement."

"Yeah, right," I thought. Instead of voicing my thought I asked, "Are
you Tutti Cameratta?"

"No, I'm Warren Barker" came the reply. We then learned he had written
the original for the Tutti's Trombones album and it had subsequently
been used on the East vs.West album. He also told us the basement his
house in the midwest had been flooded but fortunately he had the album
jacket displayed on his wall so it was saved.

He was a perfect gentleman about our "rip" and we talk about the
unbelievable coincidence to this day. By the way, the best rip of the
arrangement is Mike Suter's. I'm sure he can shed more light on the
circumstances of the ten trombone albums - Tuttis, The Trombones Inc
and, my favorite, Pete Rugolo's Ten Trombones like two Pianos.

Thanks for jogging the memory, Josh!
