Bill,
As long as we're picking on Larry...
If you go to his web site, you'll find that among the required material for those in his trombone studio is:
A large-bore [.547 bore] trombone with "F" attachment and an appropriate mouthpiece ;-)
[Emoticon at the end is Larry's.]
There's also this:
No later than the Fall Semester of the Junior year each Tenor Trombone Performance Major must have exclusive use of an Alto Trombone. Having an Alto Trombone earlier than this is highly recommended. One work on the Senior Recital must be performed on Alto Trombone. In addition, orchestral works written for the Alto Trombone should also be performed on that instrument.
So, yeah, if you count the alto as a "small one," maybe you'll qualify for a scholarship, too.
I don't suppose that Larry has read Howard Weiner's article on the alto's use (or, non-use) in Vienna in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries?
By the way, the web site has some interesting things, which helped me to avoid a couple of hours of practice yesterday. Highly recommended.

And, yes, that would be a good environment for anyone. My old buddy Susan K. Smith is second trombonist in Nashville. Good section. Lots of music in Nashville.

Yes but do you have scholarships for those that play small trombones as well??
(Sorry - the former English Major in me couldn't resist)

Hi Folks, I'd appreciate it if you would advise your students looking at
schools to consider the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University. Great
place to study and grow and we have substantial scholarship monies (including
full tuition scholarships - several of them) available for trombone students.
Feel free to contact me and please visit my website to find additional
information. Thanks, Larry Lawrence Borden Associate Professor of Trombone Blair
