Micha Davis, Principal bass trombonist of the Israeli Philharmonic, had a surprise party for his 50th birthday last Saturday.
The party, confidencially arranged by his wife Shelly (clarinetist of the Israeli Philharmonic) his daughter Inbal (baritone player, Israel Defence Army Band) and his friends, took place at "Ha'ozen Hashlishit" ("The Third Ear"). This is a huge CD store in Tel Aviv which has also movie halls and a bar.
Micha, thinking he was going to a Mel Brooks movie, entered the dark hall and was welcome with 5 trombone s & tuba arrangement of
"Happyb Birthday" (I sent the score to the list few days ago. The trombone ensemble included the philharmonic trombone section:
Daniel Marondini (principal), Yehoshua Pasternak and Nir Erez (assistant), joined by Tovy Meshulam, Eliezer Aharoni (on trombone) and
Dudu Buch (on tuba).
Ray Parnes, retired principal trombonist of the IPO, joined the group singing "Like Someone In Love" (Burke/Van Heusen) arranged by Erez Nir, and Herman Hupfeld's "As Time Goes By". The group continued playing "Venezuela" by Vilensky (both arrangements by Eli Aharoni).
Then, Micha was surprisingly handed a horn and joind the group to play Pederson's "Rosco Bosco" and Micha's own arrangement of
"Lechayey Ha'ahava" ("Cheers to Love"). Then all attendents watched Mel Brooks' movie "History of Mankind".
It was a great party, with the rare opportunity to gether such an ensemble and perform such nice music.
Eliezer Aharoni
