I have recently been writing and adapting some of my big band charts for an
upgraded 'bugle' band here in Scotland. It is basically a big band in which
trombones are replaced by Bb baritones and saxes replaced by mellophones in
F. Bb Trumpets are used in place of the traditional bugles in G. No tuba,
which is a pity as the baris are limited in low range by having only 3
valves, tho' the pedals come out loud and clear.

I was asked to sit in on baritone for one of their gigs. Heck, those large
bore (bass 'bone m.p. fits perfectly), flügel shaped things are so heavy to
hold up for long periods. I think the regular players must work out in the
gym.
