Charles---are you talking about something like a pure-plastic MP, like a
Kelly or a Lexan Rim, like Doug Elliott or Terry Warburton can furnish.
I used a Kelly 1.5G for a lot of my 22 outdoor gigs, here in SW OH, between
Thanksgiving and Christmas. I am normally using a larger bass-bone MP, for
my regular playing, like a Carl Hammond 21BL (59/60 size).
Most of the playing we did was in 25 degree to 35 degree outdoor-weather.
Not fun!
I found the Kelly to be a little brighter than my Hammond set-up, but, who
cares when you are outdoors and put your lips on a ice cube of a mouthpiece
or a nice less-cold piece of plastic. Also, I like slippery mouthpieces,
like gold or silver; and, that Kelly does not allow much movement inside
the MP.
For those of you bass bone players who like a Kelly, larger than a 1.5, I am
told we need to contact Kelly and he might have some larger Kelly's or maybe
make one, on an individual basis. This is just hear-say, as I have not made
any contact, yet, with Kelly.
One of our trombonists in our quartet used a Warburton Lexan-Cup on his
two-piece set-up from Terry. I have another friend who uses a Lexan rim on
his Elliott, as he can not use either brass or gold, for medical reason.
Hope this helps.
