[Trombone-l] Schuman: Tenor or Alto?

Using the alto is more authentic, though some players (or instruments) get somewhat "trumpetish" sound on the alto.
On the other hand, I've played with some players that got a very soft blending sound on a largev tenor. My late first teacher,
former principal trombonist in Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, played the "Rheinich" several times and his tone and the blend were so beautiful - its one of my best memories from the orchestra.
In some cases, the conductor will like to call which horn to use. This reminds me an anecdote I heared from Carsten Svandberg:
A conductor (don't remember which) said to him:
-Why don't you play it on the alto?
and he replied : -but, maestro, I am playing it on the alto...
