I suppose, in my own special way I'm most envious of you, Dr Dyess.
OK... Next time I'm in Texas, could I sit in with YOUR big band? Might not be the same as sitting in with Mr Roberts, but .. well, one can dream.
Not so many big bands 'round Charleston.

Wow. You know, I actually had that to happen. I met George way back
in the early 70s at the Navy School of Music. The DC band was playing
a concert featuring Mr. Roberts, and he presented a clinic after the
rehearsal. Fast forward to the 1990s and lo and behold I was in the
bone section with George Roberts in a Frank Sinatra, Jr. show -- and
the man actually remembered my name.
That was a killer band, too. Buddy Childers on lead trumpet... Shelly
Berg on piano. They even flew in a couple of strings from the New
York Phil, so I'm told. Most all were friends of Pt. Arthur's own,
and Jr's arranger at the time -- Bill Rogers. Pete Peterson (leads a
big band in Dallas) on the bari sax. There were so many great players
on that band that day. I guess I've played a few dream jobs in my
lifetime, for which I am most thankful.
That was a very special day. George Roberts has to be one of the
nicest people on this planet!
