[Trombone-l] do you object to teaching euph/baritone?

This might be the case in the US however, it seems that in the UK Euphonium
is a well established and recognised instrument with some very very good
players - such as David Thornton, David Childs, and others one fellow in
particular name escapes me - he has made something like 6 solo CD's.
I just happened to be down in Seattle this past week-end for a Brass Band
Festival that featured 4 British styled brass bands and the Director of the
North West Brass Band, based out of Seattle, had to fly back to Florida to
perform with the US Army, I believe they said it was, as a guest soloist. He
is a major in Eupho as well - retired or formerly with the US Air Force
Band.
There is also a 'comeback' if that is the correct word for Baritone (Bb
Baritone players) who are also performing in the UK and Europe.
These are many of these folk are also affiliated with the British Brass Band
scene of which I follow closely - so maybe there is a greater focus there
than in the Symphonic and Jazz scene.
Oh, the fellow's name I was trying to remember above is Steven Mead. He is
very advanced in his playing and recording - and I would urge you to try to
listen to him sometime. Probably has some clips on You Tube
I guess it depends what sort of music type you follow - I love Brit Brass
Bands, but I also have a great love for Symphonic music.

Folks,

I have a colleague who objects to teaching euph since there is no
continuing path except (in his opinion) a band director, community band,
or service band.

I feel this is wrong since it is only the rarest case that we find
someone wanting to major in euph performance. Do you think this opinion
is common among our brethren?
