Yes, It was by Dr. Mark McDunn from DePaul University And Clifford Barnes
The book is called "Trombone Artistry, published by Leblanc". (1965). I do
have a copy of the book.
Also I have an old LP with McDunn soloing.
The book contains flexibility studies, scales, interval studies, thorough
arpeggio studies including extended chords, articulation studies
and few solo transcriptions. Make an excellent practice material for the
determined student. The 51 positions are not a topic,
merely rather pedantic attempt to teach the nuances of intonation
corrections on positions. He claims that basically there are
about 8 locations on each position, (natural position, 5 raised variants
and two lowered) excluding the 1st that has only four locations.

Subject: [Trombone-l] 51 positions of the trombone?
Folks,
Really = NOT the Kama Sutra, rather I found a page in a piece of music
outlining the "51 positions of the trombone." I seem to remember, in my
Swiss cheese brain, that this was a method book written by a Chicago
trombone player/teacher. I met him in the 60's, but I only have a vague
memory of his name (maybe Dr. Mark ______ ?). Does anyone else recall
having seen this.
I think it is one of the more stupid topics for a method book,
especially since no two trombones are alike, but I do understand and
appreciate the theoretical acoustics involved - but a method book????
