[Trombone-l] Student Solo with Orchestra Question

The _Concertino for Trombone and String Orchestra_ (1955) Opus 45, No. 7
by Lars-Erik Larsson is an excellent piece for high schoolers. Trombone
and piano is for sale on the Hickeys site, score and parts are rental.
Movements II and III, or III alone, are especially accessible and fit
your time limit.

The David _Concertino_ (on the Hickey's page) is often played by high
school players, though they might do only movement/section I, III or II
and III..

I don't know why the Gordon Jacob _Concerto_ is not on the the Hickey's
page - perhaps it is rental, also. Movement I or III, maybe II.

Over the last 15 years or so my students have had good luck in the local
youth orchestra concerto competition. Students there have played:

 >Guilmant "Morceau Symphonique" (two or three times) - the arrangement
that Henry Charles Smith recorded on "First Chair Encores." I used to
have info for renting it but have lost it - perhaps some on the list
have it.
 >Larsson Mvt II and III (twice)

There was also a euphonium duet (trombonist and tubist in the orchestra)
playing a bassoon duo concerto, but this doesn't help you.

Plus one night, (May '99) in particular, that I remember well. The
orchestra featured six student soloists - three of my students (playing
Jacob _Concerto_ Finale, David _Concertino_ I, and R-K _Concerto_ II &
III), my son on doublebass (playing the Kousevitsky _Concerto_) and the
concertmistress (who also happened to study trombone with me for several
years) playing a violin concerto movement! (Oh, yeah, plus another
violinist I didn't have anything to do with.) Quite a night for an old
guy like me!

Hope this helps (and sorry for the bragging.)

I'm looking for something no longer than about 10 minutes, with orchestra (either strings, chamber or full) and suitable for this age group. I'm not sure if we're going to limit the entrants to just the pieces we list or allow them to pick anything (as long as we can get orchestra accompaniment for it). This competition is very new, so some of these details are yet to be worked out. But for now, I think we're going to limit the pieces to the ones we list.
