[Trombone-l] Student Solo with Orchestra Question

The orchestra I play with is sponsoring a solo wind & brass competition for students, ages 13-18. (This year we had a string competition.) The winner gets a few bucks and plays their piece with the orchestra at one of our concerts.

It's my job to come up with 4 or 5 recommended pieces for solo trombone and orchestra for the trombone entrants. I'm looking for something no longer than about 10 minutes, with orchestra (either strings, chamber or full) and suitable for this age group. I'm not sure if we're going to limit the entrants to just the pieces we list or allow them to pick anything (as long as we can get orchestra accompaniment for it). This competition is very new, so some of these details are yet to be worked out. But for now, I think we're going to limit the pieces to the ones we list.

So far I'm thinking of the Mozart bassoon concerto (Ostrander transcription)-1st movement, Morceau Symphonique (Guilmant), possibly the Rimsky-Korsakov concerto (Lindberg transcription).

Tom Ervin provided the following link to trombone with orchestra pieces on Hickey's web site:

www.hickeys.com/pages/tnworch.htm

However, I'm not familiar with many of these pieces. So I'm looking for feedback on which pieces you all think might fit these requirements. Thanks.
