[Trombone-l] dyslexic students

I would think that it would depend on just how the dyslexia manifests
itself. Does the student confuse letters within words, swap around
letters, or just can't process the visual input at all? Is there an
actual diagnosis of dyslexia, or just a seat-of-the-pants guess?

I had a student many years ago who couldn't process the visual input
at all. He played really well by ear, but never really got too good at
reading music. One thing that helped with him was to write out stuff
for him on that easy big note staff paper, so that it was maybe twice
as big as normal. We also enlarged his band music on a copy machine.
It helped a bit, maybe because the larger size print got more neurons
involved in the processing?

You might want to talk with a remedial reading teacher, or a special
ed teacher, and get some ideas on strategies from them.
