Jackie;

            I didn't meet Blazevich until I got to university - in 1974 - as a Tuba Performance Major.  Your husband's story may fit today's practices - but back in the dark ages - no one knew of anything worth playing on Tuba until you got pretty intensely into it - and quite accomplished.  Of course I didn't grow up where lessons from Orchestral type (read educated) players was possible so my experience may not be typical.  But an 11 year old - even an advanced one - was playing out of "Rubank" or "Belwin" or one of those - when I was that age.  Of course I didn't have a teacher either - much less a Russian so who knows for sure?  Maybe your hubby's russian teacher is actually Nehlybell on the run from the KGB or something - and he had to quit teaching her to go "on the lamb" again.... Hey it could happen.

           Anyway I think the level of play indicated is way high for even Atypical 11 year old players of the time period.  It may not be as hip - and I knwo everyone here was of course playing all those things and more before leaving the womb - but to be honest we weren't nearly as advanced then as a comparably aged youngster is today.  Honest.
