What:

GRAMMY®-winning Southwest Chamber Music presents guest artists Ricardo Gallardo and Alfred Bringas of the Grammy-nominated Tambuco Percussion Ensemble, percussionist Lynn Vartan, guitarist John Schneider and soloists of Southwest Chamber Music in a monumental program of the complete Encounters by one of America's most important composers and percussionists, William Kraft. 

 

The Encounters - described as "an epic body of work comparable in scope to Berio's Sequenzas" (American Record Guide) - span over a forty-year history of composition, beginning in the 1960s. Celebrating the 85th birthday of William Kraft, this concert will complete the first integral survey of his Encounters series, including a world premiere of Encounters XV written specifically for guitarist John Schneider and percussionist Lynn Vartan. Encounters XV was commissioned by the Fromm Foundation at Harvard University.

 

Supported by the Schoenberg Family Charitable Fund, the James Irvine Foundation, the Argosy Contemporary Music Fund, and the National Endowment for the Arts, the first two parts of the Encounters were performed and recorded in October 2007 and March 2008; the last part will be recorded in October after this performance.
