[Trombone-l] Jug Tone?

That is a great Spike Jones recording, I loved it. I now know more about
Fonks and Nurns and Nyoinks than I ever considered. Having played the
arrangement of Farewell Blues that was initially asked about, that's
definitely not the sound it calls for, but still a most interesting
discussion. The Farewell Blues up-tempo intro starts with a few bars of
rhythm that is meant to sound like a train coming down the tracks and then
a few bars of trombone solo that is meant to sound similar to a low distant
melodic train whistle.  The airy whisky jug sound is probably close to what
was wanted, but it needs to be in the right key since it leads right into
the main body of the piece. You can play it with bucket, soft-tone, a rag
in hand, or no mute at all. It then kicks off into a high energy, very
entertaining Dixieland piece with solos all around. It makes for a good
concert closer.
