I received a letter today from Colin Williams, principal trombone in
the Atlanta Symphony. He writes that the upcoming season includes John
Adams's Dr. Atomic and that "contemporary works like this often
provide greater range and complexity for trombones, so I find the
process incredibly gratifying." Also, he is "very excited to be
performing Mahler's Symphony No. 6 this season. Mahler wrote such
wonderful parts for trombone and this piece is an amazing journey,
both cathartic and poignant at the same time."
Well, OK: This isn't an example of a trombone star dropping me a line
to tak shop. It's is a fundraising letter sent out to a bunch of us
season ticket folks. Just our luck that the trombonist's letter came
to trombone-heavy family.
Colin Williams played the Creston Fantasy a few years ago, when he
was a relative newcomer to the Atlanta Symphony. Last season (or maybe
the tail end of the season before that) I heard the ASO play Bruckner'
4th Symphony. At the risk of borrowing a term from a different genre,
I'll just say that the brass *rocked*. Hearing brass players like that
perform Bruckner live with pro-quality tone, intonation, and blend is
unparalleled. Then again, the Mahler should be right up there with it.
