Hey Sandy,

I'm glad you and your home are safe. I'm afraid a lot of people were lulled into staying this time because Gustav was such a dud for us. Ike, however, was a major , major storm. We, too, considered staying. We were monitoring the storm minute by minute and were making arrangements to stay. We bought food to last for 5 days, and had battened down windows and all those things that were recommended.

We were also watching the web pics from Txdot (department of transportation) showing bumper to bumper traffic, sitting at home saying we'd just rather weather the storm than to sit in that traffic with small children and animals in tow. However, once we saw the sheer size of this hurricane, and that it was headed for Galveston (putting our area on the worst side of the storm), we started packing and decided to leave.

Unlike Rita 3 years ago, this time I didn't have my class notes from school, so I can't work on my class lectures this time. I did bring my trombone, but no books. Thankfully, I do have several of the etudes from the Voxman Selected Studies book committed to memory, along with some Rochut/Bordogni, and a good sampling of solo's. That is good enough reason to do memory work. And I have a lot of the Jamie Aebersold recordings in mp3 form now on my computer. I'm good to go!

My son stayed in the area. He called a bit ago to let us know our home is intact, but that we had some minor flooding... mostly in my office and the living room. There is a window blown out in the back bedroom, but the damage appeared to be minimal. Our neighbor, however, lost their roof. I don't know the extent of that damage as our phone connection went kaput at that point.

Tornado's are still a possibility in your area, so keep your eyes and ears open -- and stay safe!

Best wishes,
