[Trombone-l] Toyoji Tomita Memorial & Benefit Concert

Toyoji Tomita (1951-2008) was a trombonist who studied at the  
Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music.  In1976 he won the  
First Prize in the Gaudeaumus International competition for  
Interpreters of Modern Music in Rotterdam, Holland. Living in Paris,  
France for the next three years, he toured Europe extensively both as  
a soloist and as a member of the Ensemble Musique Vivante, Diego  
Masson director. He received an M.F.A. in electronic composition from  
Mills College in 1986.  at was an instructor at  Mills College in  
Oakland, CA.  He died unexpectedly in April.

Trombonist Stuart Dempster will be among the featured artists  
performing at a memorial benefit concert on Wednesday, Sep. 10th at
Lisser Hall at Mills College, 5000 MacArthur Blvd, Oakland, CA, with  
all proceeds going directly to the Tomita family.  Tax-deductible

Deep Listening Institute, Ltd. and the Mills College Music Department  
proudly present this special evening of performances to honor Toyoji  
Tomita who unexpectedly passed away earlier this year.  Toyoji was an  
accomplished trombonist who studied at the Juilliard School and the  
Curtis Institute of Music. He was a music instructor at Mills College  
in Oakland and performed with several ensembles in the Bay Area.  
Toyoji was the owner and president of T.P.T. Gardener, Inc., one of  
the first sustainable gardening companies to be awarded public works  
contracts including the City of Oakland Frank Ogawa Plaza project and  
the Alameda County Juvenile Hall renovation project.


This concert event will feature an impressive lineup of friends and  
collaborators of Toyoji, including Roscoe Mitchell, Pauline Oliveros,  
Stuart Dempster, Phillip Gelb, Ghost Dance Trio, the Cardew Choir lead  
by Tom Bickley, Andy Strain, Tom Djll, Wendy Burch, Marianne McDonald  
Tomita, the Didjeridu Ensemble, as well as the ensemble Brassiosaurus  
performing Tomita's composition "Three Blind Mice."  The evening will  
begin with a tree planting ceremony on the grounds of Mills College.   
A Japanese maple will be dedicated to Toyoji and planted in the West  
courtyard outside of the main office window of the Music Building.


Deep Listening Institute's president Pauline Oliveros and artistic  
director Ione will present Deep Listening's Golden Ear Award created  
by sculptor Jon Steel to Marianne McDonald Tomita in honor of Toyoji  
Tomita.  Other awards will be presented to sound artist Brenda  
Hutchinson and in memory of Jack Nakamura and artist Ann Chamberlain.   
A reception will follow the concert in the Ensemble Room.


All proceeds to this event will go to the Tomita Fund for the family.   
A suggested donation of $20 is requested for general admission.  The  
event is free for Mills students, faculty and staff.  For more
