Layers has Latin-jazz influenced rhythms and phrasing, improvised
solos, and a big-band brass sound. In this concert we will be breaking
the barriers between genres of music. On the jazz and Latin side we
have "Layers", "Eclectix" by John Cheetham, "Siboney" by Ernesto Lecuona
(arr. Todd Bashor), "Gallito" by Rafael Mendez, "Trio" for percussion by
Joseph Thompkins, and a stunning jazz arrangement of the "Kyrie" from
Bach's Mass in b minor by David Matthews. On the classical side we have
John Corigliano's "Fanfare to Music", Merle Hogg's "Concerto for
Brass", Morten Lauridsen's "O Magnum Mysterium", and William Walton's
"Prelude and Fugue: the Spitfire" (arr. Elgar Howarth.) "Eclectix" and
"Siboney" were commissioned last year by Hora Decima.
The Hora Decima Brass Ensemble is one of the leading large brass
groups in America and has been hailed by the American Record Guide for
its "superb ensemble...most impressive and enjoyable."
This ensemble has 17 brass and percussion players and features
trombonists Bruce Eidem, Brian Mahany, and Jeff Nelson. Terry Pierce
plays euphonium.
