Intonation is even more complicated than getting into the right slide position. Intonation changes from attack to sustain. More than anything else, that change is why synthesized trombone sounds (as opposed to sampled trombone notes) sound synthesized. (Another biggie is having every note sound identical.)
Surely the best way to keep intonation correct is to listen to what you're playing and to the other players. No matter what you think of your intonation, being out of tune compated with the rest of the group is surely a worse offense. And the only way to get that right is to listen.
