Galen:

I would encourage you to dig deeper into the subject of intonation after
you are comfortable with the general guidelines that a trombone position
chart will give you. Having a clear understanding of how and when to
adjust our pitch is critical to playing in tune. As many of you know,
playing the E (3rd) in a C Major chord, must be adjusted differently
than the same E (5th) in an A Major chord. The subject of intonation is
difficult to get your arms around and can be VERY controversial, but
learning some of the basic concepts will go a long way in our playing.

There are a number of Intonation related books and play-along CDs that
have recently come out, but I have found that Michael Keener's "The
Intonation Tutor" has been most helpful for me. For more information
regarding intonation and downloadable examples you can visit The
Intonation Tutor web site at www.keener-music.com

The package includes and Audio CD and 42 page manual with instructions,
explanations of the process, and printed music corresponding to the
audio tracks. I have found this as a great way to practice playing in
tune and learn about the differences of playing in a section or ensemble
and playing with piano. The CD includes exercises for playing scales,
intervals above and below scales, duets, trios, and quartets. This is a
great workout in and of itself!

Hope this helps and let me know if you would like information on other
resources I have on this subject.

Can someone recommend a source for an intonation chart for an
independent inline Bb/F/Gb/D Bass Trombone? There are so many options /
slide position choices available for this animal.
