[Trombone-l] New: Personal Blast Shield Needed

I have a pair of custom Westone earplugs - the kind where they make a
mold of your ear canals. The filters I selected were 9 db (15 db and
25 db are also available). That's enough to take the edge off a
trumpet in each ear, and I can still hear myself well enough.

Of course, they aren't cheap. I'm guessing $150, maybe more. I got
mine on a special group deal for $100 several years ago.

ban> Seeking input for protecting hearing.
ban> I play in a big band where the lead trpt stands right behind me. The
ban> set up is per director's orders, so there's no moving around. The trpt
ban> is a nice guy and fine player. He is the only one who does not play
ban> with a raised stand; rather, its completely down. He plays directly
ban> into the back of my head and/or either ear and won't play over my
ban> head. When I present the problem to him, he refuses to change or
ban> adjust and says, 'that's just how I play.' I'm not sure if he has
ban> shoulder problems and can't raise his arms high enough or what.

ban> Instead of making a bigger issue, I've decied to build a clear plexi/
ban> Lexan 'blast shield' to mount on the chair back and protect my ears
ban> and head from direct attack.

ban> Anyone have experience with this situation, this remedy or
ban> alternatives? Ear plaugs don't help the back of the head and don't
ban> allow for good pitch tuning w/others.

ban> Thanks in advance for any input. First concert of the season coming up
ban> Monday. Home Depot this weekend!!
