Subject: [Trombone-l] Edwards 1998 hard case puts dent in slide

I assume you'll be reading this after Thanksgiving, so I hope you had a
pleasant one.

When I bought my Edwards tenor trombone 10 years ago, I was told by Edwards
that a known defect in the Getzen hard cases, one that could put dents in
slides, had been corrected. The other day, I dropped my case for the first
time in those ten years, two feet to a concrete floor, and now the outer
slide has a nice dent with a pattern of wiggly scratches leading up to it,
like skidmarks. I'm steamed: A two-foot drop should not have caused any
damage. At the point in the case that aligns with the dent, I found what
feels like the head of a staple sticking out, put there to attach the large
accessory compartment.

This has been the smoothest slide I've ever found on any trombone, and I
only hope it can be repaired to that state. I'm taking it to the excellent
brass repairman who's been doing my work recently and has a fine reputation
around Cincinnati.

I guess I'm done putting off purchasing a gig bag. Thanks for listening to
me vent.

Thanks,
Dave Burch

"If the weather threatened, the men took the extra time to locate and place
the tools in the large, waterproof ammo chest by their tent. And so their
days ended with this regard for their tools, and the days began as they
squinted over coffee in the exhilarating open air, knowing where the shovel
was, and the chain, and the awl, and the Korg tuner, and the Beversdorf
mute, and the King 2B in case there's an alto part..."
