Played a Dvorak 9 gig a few years ago where the tuba tried to sneak off the stage after the 2nd movement and fell very noisily and obtrusively down the back! Folded the edge of his bell a tad. Might have been less noticeable if he'd waited for the Scherzo to start! Audience was treated to the trombone section adminstering first aid (you'll recall bones don't play the scherzo).

You'd think composers would consider these things! Another one is Das Lied von der Erde where there's 14 bars of tuba in the 4th movement and nothing else in the whole 50 minutes. I couldn't imagine being able to get any crap like that past any publisher's editor I know . . .

Luckily the guy wasn't hurt beyond a few bruises (and he had had the Meistersinger overture to play earlier).

The worst example I've witnessed was a tuba player getting down off the stage and calmly walking out through one of the aisles in the auditorium whilst the band got on with the scherzo. That guy didn't believe in hanging around!

Tuba players, gotta luvvem!

Cheers!

Keith in Bb/F/D
