[Trombone-l] Dvorak Symphony No. 9 (NWS)

Wow! And good point. I was thinking of the valve trombones used in
Dvorak's home area at the time (according to Ken Shifrin, 2 tenors and a
four-valve bass in Bb), not what was played in "the new world" for whom
it was written. It never would have occurred to me that the NY Phil
would be using valve trombones then!

The only way a three-valved trombone three could get the low notes is
falset notes - I have no idea how if they would work on a valve trombone
of that era.

BTW, the orig MS shows some higher notes for trbs 1 & 2 that were
omitted in the first publication , as I recall they appear to be crudely
erased. The unison lick for trbs 1 & 2 at the end of the first movement
goes up to a high C.

Don't have any evidence, though. RBH Tom Izzo wrote: > Richard, > > Yes, the Tuba ONLY plays the opening & closing chords of the second mov't. It is in unison with the Bass Trb & the 2nd Bassoon. Dvorak ovbiously wanted the Tuba's timbre in those chords, but I feel sorry for the poor guy who only gets to play those 14 bars on the whole concert. > That's ALL the Tuba plays in the complete "New World Symphony". > > Tom > > > Tom Izzo > Principal Trombonist, Bristol Renaissance Faire; >
