Oh absolutely, thought I'd put that as a disclaimer in my message.   
Unless the player is working hard to hide the evidence (either way),  
you could probably tell from small, tell-tale transitions that it was  
being played on slide or valve.  There are some things you can do much  
better on slide, and some you can do much better with valves.
