[Trombone-l] bass trumpet

Actually the word "trombone" is Italian.  "trom" is from the same root as
"tromba", which is the regular, non-large trumpet.  "-one" is the suffix for
large, so any Italian word ending in "-one" is likely the large version of
whatever the root refers to.

Not sure of the origin of the word "trumpet" . . .but it sounds English,
with "-et" as having derived from the Norman sources (i.e. French) as a
reduced version of "-ette". That is just guessing.

I thought in Italian the word for trombone means big trumpet, because I
always joke that in the last days when Gabriel blows the last trumpet that
they are actually going to blow a trombone because they want to blow the
bigest trumpet they can find.  lol

on a related note,  when we wash out tubas (which we are doing alot lately)
they alway say not to worry that they are just big cornets,  they are still
something heavy when they get full of water
