[Trombone-l] New music - was: "Are Digital Orchestras a Sign ofthe Times?"

Rod,
We had a similar experience a couple of months ago here in Tucson with
Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings Symphony. Two sold out shows with a
much higher percentage of first timers. It was a huge production with
two choruses, soloists, tons of percussion and unusual instruments. It
did have some of that digital movie theatre sound as the whole set up
was amplified and mixed. But the audience loved it, by far the longest
applause of the season. I can't imagine duplicating the event with a
sampler anytime soon...maybe someday on the holodeck at Starbase 9.
And speaking of dead white guys, we played the world premiere of Andre
Mathieu's (d. 1968) 4th piano concerto at the end of the season.
Probably the second longest applause of the season.

A few years back, my family and I attended a presentation of Video Games
Live. An orchestra and choir with percussion, synths and digital
effects performed music from video games. They were linked to images
from the games shown on a large screen above the stage. It was
marvellous. Modern, contemporary (in the standard meaning as opposed
to, well, noise) music. Everyone loved it. The concert did more for my
sons' appreciation of orchestral music than all of the kids' concerts
combined.
My point: digital anything will be just another colour in the palette
of contemporary composers. Another tool in the toolbox.
There should be more music of better quality than ever before.
This is a good thing.
