[Trombone-l] Speaking of lubricants

When I bought my first trombone in 1946 - a used "American Standard" by H.N.
White there was a brand new bottle of Frank Holton's #1 "Electric" oil in
the case which was what "everybody" used until I got to high school and was
introduced to Ponds. When I bought my King 2B in 1950 it came with a bottle
of King "Sure-Slick" which was some kind of emulsion that smelled like Ivory
Soap but which was pretty good slide lube. I switched back to Ponds when it
ran out which I have used ever since on that horn and the slide is still in
great shape, but I use SuperSlick and Hetman's Hydroslide on my Shires
because it smells better.

A couple of years ago in a fit of nostalgia I picked up an old American
Standard on ebay and when I opened the case --TA-DA-- a 1/8 full bottle of
Holtons #1 Electric Oil which according to "Horn Collector" is worth about
ten bucks. The original price printed on the label is $0.25 with the
standard pipe cleaner applicator or $0.35 for the "deluxe' model with a
dropper cap.
