Not SOM, but earlier. Someone asked me what might have been used on
slides in the early 19th century--or even earlier--what about sackbut
lube?
I know by mid-19th century every company had their own lubricant to
hustle--I've seen bottles of "Electric Oil" --an interesting concept,
but everything "electric" was better once this new-fangled electricity
became available. Oil bottles wouldn't tend to be kept once emptied,
so the proprietary containers would not tend to survive with the
instruments.
