I used to wonder what it would be like to live on one of the European
cities with multiple orchestra, especially London with the London
Philharmonic, London Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, Academy of St.
Martin in the Fields, Covent Garden, etc. all vying for audiences. In
Chicago, we have the Chicago Symphony and the Lyric Opera but no other
major contenders. So the pickings get to be pretty slim as a
concertgoer when the same works are in heavy rotation, as has been the
case with the CSO in recent years.
