Ray,
I think that the choice of repertoire depends on
-- in this case, what music the two guest conductors would like to do, as coordinated with the rest of the particular orchestra's season.
-- the time of year - I find that June is a time for unusual big works that don't sell as well as Beethoven (they did all nine in Baltimore this year).
-- the usual question of repertoire balance throughout each orchestra's season. (To me, the programs now are assembled more with marketing in mind - a fact of life when money is short.)
I think that these factors make program coordination between the orchestras impractical, while their relationship as competitors is strong enough to prevent coordination, even if it were practical. The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra moved into the National Symphony Orchestra home market a few years ago with a strong series of concerts in a new hall, the Strathmore Center, in the NW suburbs of Washington, so this is a serious matter.
I don't know if the Strathmore concerts have hurt ticket sales in the NSO Kennedy Center concerts. Surely they look closely at each other's programming.
