Chris - actually the horn was made by fabricators of scientific glassware so 
it is safe to assume they were using a borosilicate galss such as "Pyrex" 
which when properly annealed to remove the stresses created during the 
joining of the parts at 900+ degrees results in a pretty tough piece of 
equipment. (No it won't stand the stress of dropping on the floor) I have 
seen some pretty complex pieces of lab equipment fabricated in shops like 
this, so I know the artistry to fabricate a trombone exists, but I still 
stand in awe of the craftsmanship.
