[Trombone-l] Improv in daily routine

I attended a class at the Eastern Trombone Workshop a couple of years ago,
and I'm sure it was by someone well-known, I just don't remember who at the
moment. But he talked about the basic components of improvisation. I don't
think he was implying you have to have all of these, but he relayed that
the basic components one needs to be an improvisor are the 4 "T's", that
is, to have good:

      Tone
      Technique
      Sense of Time
      Thoughts (ideas)

Most of us are better at some of these than others, but it was helpful for
me to think of it in this context because it gave me a framework of things
I need to work on.

Once you can sound OK, playing along with the stereo, different keys and
boredom will drive you to start practicing specific things. But
improvising will be fun almost from the start.

I shun the mentality that you can't get started until you know X, Y and Z.
That's the same mentality that got them to the point of having to ask how
to get started on improvisation. And surely, in order to get good at
improvisation, you need to practice improvisation.
